Our Story

Brothers_Photo.jpeg

Brothers Phil and Nate grew up in Grand Junction in the 1980s and 1990s and understand the culture, community values, and what resonates as genuine. Foreseeing market trends, they formed Grand Valley Micro Farms in 2021.

Both are U.S. Air Force veterans and have more than 40 years of combined public service experience in emergency preparedness, operations and logistics. They carry forward their grandparents’ work ethic and love of farming.

They joined the Grand Junction Business Incubator Center’s five-year intensive program in January 2022 to incorporate fundamental business practices into everyday processes and network with small business owners and entrepreneurs throughout the Grand Valley.

Our vision is to enhance community vitality through innovative microgreens processes and partnerships.

Our mission is providing quality microgreens to increase flavor and nutrition in Western Colorado cuisine while strengthening sustainable agribusiness networks.

Our culture is based on our Air Force experience of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do. With that foundation, we focus on being dependable, consistent, innovative, and responsive to customer feedback.

Our value proposition: We strive to provide next-day freshness of locally-grown microgreens that have short shelf lives and greater nutritional value per ounce than their adult counterparts. We deliver exceptional quality and customer service through attention to every detail and rigorous reliability.

How We Do It

The right medium makes the difference.

We start with either organic soil or pure coconut coir medium that is OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) organic, sustainable, and improves water holding capacity compared to soil. Note: 100% of our post-growing byproducts are repurposed into local composting, worm farms, and chicken feed operations.

Fluid food.

In the coco coir trays, we add a balanced liquid nutrient solution that contains all 90 naturally occurring mineral elements and boosts nutritional value and enhances product flavor.

It all starts with the right seeds.

We partner with seed vendors who provide organic and non-GMO seeds and ensure food quality testing safety standards.

Pure water and clean air.

For irrigation, we use water that undergoes a three-stage filtration process utilizing micro sediment membranes, KDF-55 and coconut shell carbon.

Not only is the water clean, but we ensure the grow atmosphere has the right amount of airflow for oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange. That airflow is cleaned via HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters to remove any potential contaminants or mold spores.

Eco-friendly packaging.

Upon harvesting, we place our products in either compostable or recyclable containers and then promptly refrigerate them to ensure maximum freshness and crisp presentation to the consumer. Our standard of practice is to ensure each product is in the consumer’s hands within 24 hours of harvesting.
